Xbox One Ditches Cortana, Implements A More Simplified UI

Microsoft is officially – and finally, for some – making changes to the Xbox One hub, ditching Cortana and implementing a simpler UI. This decision comes at the tail end of a significant amount of feedback from the community, with Microsoft promising that they’ve “heard your feedback” and is committed to getting you “into your gaming experiences faster and keeping more of your content front and center.”

To that end, the more simplified UI achieves thus by removing the Twists from the top of Home, being replaced instead with separate buttons that are geared toward launching different gaming experiences. According to Microsoft, another of their goals with this update was to make it easier to get into Xbox Game Pass, Mixer, Xbox Community, and Microsoft Store, all the while providing a bit of extra room for recently played titles.

Voice Commands are also getting a bit of an overhaul, though these changes appear to be a bit more complex in nature. For starters, Xbox users will no longer be able to talk to Cortana via headset. Cortana is still accessible, albeit through the dedicated Cortana app for Androis, iOS, and Windows, or through a Harmon Kardon Invoke speaker, which offers a solution similar to Alexa. Microsoft also plans on improving the Xbox Skill across its other supported digital assistants, though that could mean anything at this point.

Microsoft ended its update post by saying that “Starting this week, this update will roll out to our Alpha Skip Ahead ring and will fully rollout to all users this fall.  As part of these changes, this update will temporarily disable dictation for the virtual keyboard on Xbox One. Don’t worry though, our team is working to provide an alternative solution and will have more details to share soon.”
