Xbox Wants To Be The “Netflix For Games,” Says Microsoft
Microsoft and Xbox has made a strong effort to include streaming for Xbox alongside pushes toward virtual reality gaming. Netflix is a pillar in popular culture at the moment as the leading subscription service for streaming movies and TV shows all over the world, but it looks like the aforementioned company sees them as inspiration for the gaming industry.
Based on a statement from Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella, they aspire to become the Netflix version for games. “We describe it as, shorthand, ‘Netflix for games,’ Nadella told Business Insider. “We have as much a shot to build a subscription service as anybody else.” He continued by saying:
We have a hug back catalog, which is we have our own games. We have a structural position in that we have both a console business as well as a PC business, which happens to be bigger than the console business when it comes to gaming.”
In addition to that, the mobile market is one Xbox and Microsoft intend to lengthen their reach toward. “There are 2 billion people who play video games on the planet today. We’re not gonna sell 2 billion consoles,” Phil Spencer previously told Business Insider. “Many of those people don’t own a television, many have never owned a PC. For many people on the planet, the phone is their compute device. It’s really about reaching a customer wherever they are, on the devices that they have.”
Seeing as Netflix is available on any platform with an app store, it makes business sense to further pursue this domain. Whether you’re on the go, can’t afford a PC, or can’t be bothered to operate on non-portable devices, it seems like streaming is starting to mold the future in gaming and entertainment. One could take into consideration Steam, for example, who successfully managed video game streaming for mobile devices straight from a user’s account via the Steam Link app.
Despite the current trajectory of the video game industry, what do you think about Xbox and Microsoft’s aim to become the Netflix of gaming? Is this a worthwhile model to invest in or should they focus their energy elsewhere?
