Naughty Dog’s hit franchise The Last of Us has had quite an interesting and fruitful year in 2020. The Last of Us Part II, while facing several delays and toxic fan interactions, finally arrived this summer and ended up becoming the bestselling game of the year, as well as the second biggest launch ever for Sony. The series showed that its evolution will continue in the form of a live-action Last of Us HBO adaptation. Many have wondered though what exactly this series will do to differentiate itself from a narrative that fans are already familiar with. It seems that one solution to this will involve including a specific jaw-dropping moment cut from the game.

As reported on Prima Games, The Last of Us HBO series writer Craig Mazin was recently interviewed by the BBC regarding his work with Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann and spoke about their process adapting The Last of Us to television. He described one aspect that involved finding ways to make this take on Joel and Ellie’s story stand out from the game as its own unique experience. Apparently, this will include using story ideas and scenes from the game that were ultimately cut from the final version. When asked about which scenes and how Mazin reacted to them, this is what he had to say:

Jaw drop – that’s going in. For sure, we have to do that. You couldn’t stop me doing that. You will have to shoot me [to stop me] from doing that. And there were a few things like that.”

Mazin didn’t mention more about what The Last of Us jaw-dropping moment entails, but it would seem there are several axed concepts from the game that will make it into the show. He also expressed their intent to make fans fall in love with the story all over again, this time in a different way. Mazin seems to understand the relationships, dynamics and arcs that make The Last of Us special, and hopefully this mysterious deleted scene from the game gives veteran fans something new to look forward to that has them clicking their pants.
