Telltale Games’ Cancelled Zombie Project Details Revealed By Former Employee
The news of Telltale Games laying off its employees and closing up shop was a surprise to many in the gaming world. Not only did many anticipated projects get cancelled, but also, and more importantly, hundreds of people were left without a job. That said, one of the cancelled games appears to have been a zombie-based project, and now one of the former employees has unveiled a few details.
A recent story to come from VG24/7 provided fans with information regarding the cancelled Telltale title revolving around the undead. Cultist Simulator creator Alexis Kennedy spoke with them, saying they were asked by Telltale to provide “consultancy on a specific narrative, procedurally generated thing.” They said that the zombie title would have featured more gameplay and that it didn’t “require a narrative designer and a writer to fine-tune every single scene.” Sadly, it was also revealed that the game had been cancelled back in March.
Former Telltale employee Stacey Mason, however, took to Twitter to point out a few inaccuracies about the original story. According to Mason, who was the creative lead on the title, the zombie project was actually cancelled last year “when the R&D dept was cut.”
So this story is partly right but gets a lot wrong. The project was cancelled when the R&D dept was cut last year. We were in production. I was the creative lead and a lot of talented people were working on it. https://t.co/o7u7YblUjm

But this is why it frustrates me so much to hear all of the “Telltale wasn’t innovating” takes. We were, actually. Radically. But Pete had hard decisions to make when he came in.

As can be seen in the tweets above, it would seem that one of the hard decisions that CEO Pete Hawley had to make was to apparently cut the R&D department after arriving in September of last year. Another point that Mason makes is how the company was criticized for not “innovating.” The cancelled zombie project shows that they were, but it didn’t make the cut.
In other news surrounding the closure of the studio, a former employee has filed a class action lawsuit against Telltale Games for laying off their employees without warning and without severance.
