Sledgehammer’s Call Of Duty Was Drastically Different Before WWII Was Greenlit

Sledgehammer's Call of Duty

Sledgehammer’s Call of Duty: WWII has received a lot of praise from fans of the series since its release this month. It seems unanimous that going back to the series’ original historical feel was a good choice, instead of continuing on the path of the recent, more futuristic titles we’ve been seeing. That is why it’s interesting to find out that the CoD: WWII that everyone has accepted with enthusiasm, was not the Call of Duty game that was originally meant to be. Sledgehammer was actually heading back down the futuristic road, but changed direction thanks to fan feedback.

Eric Hirshberg, the CEO of Activision, spoke in a recent interview about the process of making CoD: WWII and how it was almost a different game altogether. After fans who found the more recent Call of Duty games overly “gimmicky” and not enjoyable practically demanded a WWII setting, Activision listened and decided to go with the game we see today. “Sledgehammer wanted to make Advanced Warfare 2,” Eric states. However, they were aware of what the developer was capable of, saying:

We knew they would become historians, that they would tackle it with authenticity, give it tremendous care and we also knew they would capture the unspeakable scale of World War II.”

It’s a good thing that they listened to their fans on this subject, because WWII is a great game and a lot of people would be greatly disappointed if they continued on the path they were originally headed in. The title has received positive reviews so far, which is always a plus considering the franchise has seen a decline in praise since players began to lose interest in the series. The more the developers tried to make the games new and different, the more players began to drift away from the first-person shooter. Call of Duty: WWII is available now for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
