Capcom’s Resident Evil 2 Remake has been hugely successful since its release earlier this year, setting itself up as an impressive template for other developers that may be interested in reinventing some of their older, classic hits in the future. The remake itself is an excellent tribute to the original, though some newly released concept designs have provided a glimpse at how things could have looked had the devs gone in a different direction.

The Resident Evil 2 Remake devs recently partook in a roundtable discussion that revealed some of the interesting designs and features that didn’t quite make it into the game. One such feature was the idea of a fixed camera or a first-person view, which the developer spent a significant amount of time testing out. Thankfully, they went with the over the shoulder look. Another concept design piece featured a decidedly different looking Mr. X, one that was a bit more militaristic in design. It’s hard not to look at the below image and not immediately think of a flasher nosferatu, So, you’re welcome for that. Check it out below:

Some of the other designs involved different environments the team considered showing off, including a scenario where the player would be able to see the cable car descend from the mountains. Below that are some different-looking enemy designs as well, which thankfully weren’t used (because they’re super creepy).

All in all it’s interesting to see how things could have been in the Resident Evil 2 Remake, though as far as I’m concerned, it’s basically perfect the way it is. Here’s hoping that the RE2 team gets the go ahead to remake some more games from the iconic series.

The Resident Evil 2 Remake is now available for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

So, thoughts on the newly revealed concept art? Would you have preferred any of the designs over the ones currently in the game?
