Ralph Breaks The Internet Forced To Cut Kylo Ren Joke
Next month, Walt Disney Animation will be releasing the long awaited sequel to their hit animated film Wreck-It Ralph. The main plot of the film involves bringing its main characters into the internet, but Disney’s main angle for selling the film in promotional material has been to showcase all of the intellectual properties owned under the Walt Disney Company.
The trailers so far have confirmed that classic Disney, Marvel, Muppets and Star Wars characters will all be present in this one film. However, it seems that free reign has not entirely been given to the Ralph Breaks the Internet creative team, as Lucasfilm requested for a Kylo Ren joke to hit the cutting room floor.
As reported on IGN, Ralph Breaks the Internet co-directors Rich Moore and Phil Johnston, recently spoke about the extended Disney property characters included in the film. While it appears that all of Disney’s properties were allowed to appear in the sequences where Ralph and Vanellope visit the Oh My Disney website, Lucasfilm had some reservations about how a joke would be held at the expense of Kylo Ren’s personality.
“At one point we had a joke about Kylo Ren being kind of a spoiled child. We went to Lucasfilm and said, here’s what we’re doing. And they said, well, we’d prefer that you don’t show him as a spoiled child. You know, he is our villain, and we’d prefer you don’t do that. So we were respectful of that.”
While this joke was shut down, Lucasfilm did approve of other representations of its characters. For instance, the directors were allowed to use C3-P0 as the butler of the Disney princesses in the sequences where they are all together. As Johnston put it, it “felt like that’s of his character”, so that joke was allowed to stay.
Hopefully, there weren’t too many other jokes rejected from the film, but at least we do know we get to see Eeyore, Iron Man and stormtroopers in the same movie. Will you guys still see Ralph Breaks the Internet, even with this Kylo Ren joke omitted? Let us know in the comments below!
