PUBG Gamer Survives Brutal Assault By Katana-Wielding Girlfriend
Domestic violence incidents related to video games have recently been on the rise, with the latest incident involving popular battle royale title PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. Earlier this month police arrested a Washington state woman after she stabbed her boyfriend – an aspiring professional PUBG gamer – with a katana. She told the police that she stabbed him because she believed that he was cheating on her, and that he had been playing too much PUBG.
The woman was identified as Barber Emily Javier, who had been living with her boyfriend, Alex Lovell, for two years prior to the incident. According to court documents obtained by Kotaku, Javier relayed the entire story to a police officer from the back of a police cruiser immediately after the assault transpired, revealing that she had strapped a katana and two knives taped together to the side of the bed she shared with Lovell, and waited until he was asleep before stabbing him.
Javier revealed that she had become exasperated with her boyfriend, stating that he “just sits at home all day playing video games and does not do anything to help.” The PUBG gamer had apparently been spending 12 to 13 hours a day playing and training in order to break into the competitive scene. She also stated that the straw that broke the camel’s back was that she found Tinder installed on her boyfriend’s phone, after which she also discovered red hairs in the shower drain (Javier’s hair is dyed green).
After Lovell was stabbed he grappled with Javier, at which point he claimed that his instincts kicked in. “I was able to wing chun my way to survival,” Lovell revealed in an interview with The Oregonian, referring to a Chinese martial art form with a focus on close-quarters combat. “I saw the look in her eyes, and it scared the living poop out of me,” he said. “I told her I loved her, and she was killing me. She needed to call police, or I was going to die.” Javier relented and called 911, at which point she admitted to attacking her boyfriend and asking them to hurry, as she believed he was dead.
Officers arrived on the scene to find the bedroom covered in blood, with Lovell curled up in a ball. The damage Javier had done to Lovell was extensive; his index, middle and ring fingers were nearly dismembered at the base of each finger, and he also had deep lacerations on his legs and his feet, and he may have fractured his right wrist. He was immediately rushed to a hospital, at which point he was stabilized and his fingers were successfully reattached.
According to Lovell it could be up to six months before he is able to walk again, and much longer still before he is able to regain full use of his hands. “Obviously, I got some gnarly injuries,” he said. The PUBG gamer is taking everything in stride, though. “The feeling I had when I won the fight with my bare hands is just absolutely the best feeling,” he said. “I’ve played all the sports, won big games, landed some decent tricks on my snowboard. This was better.” When questioned about whether or not Lovell had been cheating on Javier, he stated that he “barely had time to hang out with my girlfriend, let alone another girl.”
Javier is currently detained in the Clark County jail, with a trial date set for May 7, 2018. Her bail is set at $350,000. Members of the PUBG gaming community have launched a GoFundMe campaign for Lovell, which at the time of writing has raised $8,272 of its $10,000 goal.
