PUBG Corp Is Taking Fortnite’s Epic Games To Court Over “Similarities”

When Epic Games first announced that they were implementing a free-to-play battle royale mode, gamers and industry names alike reacted. During this time, PUBG reigned supreme. The chicken dinner-centric title wasn’t the first to do battle royale, but it was the game that put the genre on the map. Once Fortnite’s version came to the scene, many called it a “copy,” including the PUBG creator himself. Since then, it’s pretty clear that Fortnite stands on its own. It’s a title that doesn’t take itself seriously and in no way relies on realism, as does its PUBG counterpart. Though the fires seemed to have died down and both camps are enjoying their games, it seems that PUBG corp isn’t quite ready to settle the fight.

The PlayerUnknown’s company has been threatening legal action for awhile now, though have gone quite in recent months. Many assumed that they were dropping their threats to focus on the game itself, but it appears that wasn’t the case at all. According to a recently revealed filing suit, the team behind PUBG are suing for copyright infringement and have filed and injunction on the Fortnite company back in January. Now they are going full steam ahead, most likely due to Fortnite finally making its way over to East Asia – an area still very much drenched in that PUBG fandom.

The entire purpose of the suit is to determined once and for all if Fortnite’s Battle Royale mode is an infringement on the PUBG brand and if there is anything to be done about it. Personally, I have enjoyed both games extensively and the only similarity between the two is the genre itself and an asshole blue circle. After that, the similarities just aren’t there. We’re not quite sure if PUBG Corp even has a case here, but we’ll know soon enough.

What do you think? Do you think the PUBG team needs to move on now seeing how the two titles actually are? Or do you think that Epic Games should just stick to their Save the World mode?
