PS5: Sony Confirms Next PlayStation, New Details Leaked

Sony’s upcoming PS5 has been making headlines in a big way these past few days, with patent after patent potentially revealing a few of the features we can expect from the company’s next generation console. With V-Sync and backward compatibility seemingly in the works for the new console, fans are looking forward to what else Sony may have to offer for its as yet unnamed breadwinner.

In a recent interview with Financial Times, Sony’s Kenichiro Yoshida discussed where the company is headed, and while he didn’t spill the beans on any confirmed PS5 features, he did admit that the next generation of consoles is important to the growth of the industry. “At this point, what I can say is it’s necessary to have a next-generation hardware,” he revealed. He wouldn’t disclose whether or not the fan-dubbed ‘PlayStation 5’ title would be the official name going forward, nor did he confirm any of the rumored features the console would have.

While Sony is remaining tight-lipped about the PS5, rumors about the console have consistently been swirling around the internet. According to a recent leak over on Resetera, the PS5 will reportedly be looking to tap into the growing eSports market.

Sony has also been slow to embrace the surging potential for esports, a market based around a global audience estimated at 167m that watch online streams of professionals playing games at the highest level.”

In order to more fully embrace eSports, Sony will reportedly be looking to beef up its console’s power to ensure its use in competitive events. “Industry analysts believe that Sony will be keen to rectify that through its next console, by ensuring that its machines are deemed powerful enough to host top level esport events.” The rumor certainly holds water, as Sony Interactive Entertainment, the division responsible for PlayStation, recently revealed that it was “considering various options to strengthen its position in eSports, which it sees as an effective way to encourage users to play a game for a longer period of time and to enhance the social role of games.”

Despite Sony’s pulling out of PSX 2018, we shouldn’t have much longer to wait on some official announcements regarding the PS5. Here’s hoping it’ll be worth the wait.
