Portal Movie Still In Development, Confirms J.J. Abrams
Hollywood’s big slate of upcoming films and television programs just so happens to include a variety of adaptations of beloved video game franchises. The live-action Borderlands movie is currently filming in eastern Europe, and the sequel to the hit 2019 Sonic the Hedgehog live-action movie just recently finished filming. For years, there had been reports of a Portal movie in the works, with none other than J.J. Abrams involved with the project, but updates on the project have been quite silent and scarce. Now, an update from Abrams has confirmed that the film is indeed still actively in the works.
IGN recently shared an interview they conducted with J.J. Abrams, in which the topic of the long-dormant Portal movie was brought up. During the interview, Abrams states that the script for the film is currently being written by an unnamed writer for Warner Bros. This comes eight years after it was first revealed at DICE 2013 that Abrams’s Bad Robot production company wished to help bring some of Valve’s franchises to the big screen. Abrams expresses much excitement for what the project could do to bring the game to new life in film form. As he states:
It’s got enormous potential for a lot of reasons, one of which is because of the limited narrative of the game, as ingeniously told as it is, the potential of it is so huge. It’s gonna be super fun.”
This would obviously refer to how Portal’s story is told through the characters like GlaDOS and the recordings of Cave Johnson. During the interview, Abrams acknowledges Oscar winner J.K. Simmons’s voice work as Cave Johnson being brilliant, and that he knows the fans would want to see him reprise that role for the film. Sadly though, it appears the Half-Life film does not currently have any updates on production to give, leaving this film for now to be a self-contained story. At least for now, fans can rest easy knowing that while the cake may be a lie, these words from J.J. Abrams about the Portal movie appear to be true.
