Pokemon Reveals Looney Tunes-Inspired Animated Short (VIDEO)

Whether you grew up on Looney Tunes, Pokemon, or both, The Pokemon Company has a neat little treat in store. Inspired by the retro animated shorts of the 30s and 40s, the creative animation team released a short titled “Chase the Beans” featuring Mimikyu and Zuruggu (AKA Scraggy). Scraggy finds himself in a wild predicament aboard a coal train when his obsession with edamame lands him face-to-face with a playful Mimikyu. Check out the short below:

In Chase the Beans, Scraggy finds itself following a trail of delicious edamame – a snack of steamed soybeans commonly found at Japanese restaurants. One thing leads to another and the poor kiddo finds the source of his favorite treat and suffice to say, it’s not at all what he was hoping for. In the end, the beans ended up chasing him!

Without minding Scraggy’s phallic nature in the short and his need to utilize his trousers (or are they really?) to withdraw the entirety of his body, it’s a silly, slapstick animated short that brings back memories of Looney Tunes nights in the United States. There have been plenty of spin-offs since then but nothing beats a good slapstick comedy! As seen in modern games like Cuphead, it’s a classic and revered style in its own right. It doesn’t get old no matter how much time has passed!

Directed by Taku Inoue, produced by Yoshiyuki Koie, and animated by a Miyako Makio, Ryousuke Sembo, Shinichi Suzuki, and Syuya Yosizato, the Looney Tunes-inspired Pokemon short is a fantastic representation of retro animation style. Tsutomu Ikeda was in charge of backgrounds and Kei Tsuda honored the music style perfectly with his own composition.
