PlayStation Praises Both Microsoft And Nintendo As Xbox Rallies For Unification

In the past year couple years, there’s been a shift within the video game industry, especially among the corporations that seem to run the console race – Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony. While, at first, it seemed PlayStation objected the idea of unifying in the name of cross-platform gameplay, there have been more outspoken individuals that praise the idea of teamwork within the gaming world. Take the chairman of SIE (Sony Interactive Entertainment) Worldwide Studios, Shawn Layden, for example.

During the 2019 DICE summit that took place last week, Layden took a moment during his presentation to commend both Microsoft and Nintendo for their call for unification. He stated:

Sure, we all compete for attention to further this industry but we do so to keep the video gaming landscape vibrant and essential. We have the power to bring people joy, inspiration, respite, we have the ability to transport them to new worlds and provide them with superpowers. As developers, we do not compete against one another. We all craft art, and art is founded on the creative, not the competitive.”

To add to that, Layden mentioned why it’s important to reassess the positions and influences their companies have on modern culture. He said:

The gaming industry is at an inflection point – a moment when we’re shedding our youth and becoming a cultural lodestone. The community has grown because gamers don’t grow out of gaming any longer. We’ve got a lot more folks with grey hair now than we used to. Myself included. And we do not see games as childish things to be put away. We embrace gaming as the art form of our generation – as the most powerful form of expression.”

There’s no denying more and more people are choosing not to “outgrow” the once labeled “childish” inclination toward video and board games. It is gradually morphing into an accepted part or sub-culture within popular culture. Just as the evolution and representation of art has evolved throughout generations, video games are evolving into something more significant than just entertainment.

On a roll of praising his fellow industry professionals, Layden raised attention to the Nintendo Switch’s success in 2018 as the the best-selling console of that year. However, Xbox and PlayStation will be launching their next generation console within a couple years time.

What do you think about the PlayStation executive’s sentiments on the industry’s state of affairs? Do you believe this is heading into a positive direction? Do you think the three console giants – Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo – will unite or will they continue to oppose each other in the name of competition? Let us know what you think in the comments section below or start a conversation on Don’t Feed the Gamers Facebook page.
