PlatinumGames To Self-Publish In Partnership With Tencent
Last week, PlatinumGames president Kenichi Sato revealed “big news” was on the horizon for the studio. Figuring there would be a Bayonetta or Vanquish, but the company had different plans in mind. Announcing their move toward self-publishing freedom, PlatinumGames is partnering up with game giant Tencent as an investor.
According to this recent post, Sato said: “We would like to announce we have received a capital investment from Tencent Holdings Limited as a basis for partnership. This partnership has no effect on the independence of our company, and we will continue operations under our current corporate structure.
“We hope to use this capital to strengthen our foundation as a business and expand from game development into exploring self-publishing. We also hope that this partnership can give us a wider global perspective, while still creating high quality games that stay true to our name. Thank you as always for your continued support. Please look forward to what we have in store.”
What does that mean for PlatinumGames exactly? With such a large investment from Tencent, would the studio still have the ability to call the shots? The short answer is: yes to a certain degree. After all, there’s always the fine print to be careful of. With that said, they have full independence as a developer of their own intellectual properties. With the financial support from Tencent, Platinum will have a chance to farther the reach of their brand and games.
As of now, the studio is working with Nintendo to bring about Bayonetta 3 and developing two other properties. PlatinumGames has a lot of talent and imagination to offer, so here’s all the best to them!
