Overwatch Moonbase Map Hinted at in Lijiang Tower Map Alterations
With Overwatch’s Anniversary Event now live, players are currently scrambling around trying to obtain as many loot crates as possible in hopes of unlocking some of the new legendary skins and dancing emotes that are now available. Thankfully, Reddit user /u/BillyDiesInTheEnd kept his wits about him since the anniversary patch landed, and has stumbled upon some map alteration that suggest that an Overwatch Moonbase map may be on its way to Blizzard’s first-person shooter.
The map alterations in question take place on Lijiang Tower, a control map comprised of three different stages – Garden, Night Market and Control Center – that has been in rotation since Overwatch’s release. On the Garden stage, there is a pagoda in the middle of the map that normally displays a lunar rover on a red, rotating banner. Since the Anniversary Event patch, though, that image has changed, and it now displays blueprints for a satellite. Another change to the Garden stage is the world map that it depicted before the latest patch hit – it now displays a map of the Horizon Lunar Colony instead.
Fans of Overwatch lore will remember that Winston – Overwatch’s resident Gorilla hero – was raised on the moon, coming to Earth only after the other apes rebelled and took over the base. That said, if we do end up getting an Overwatch Moonbase map, it is likely that the area will be full of references to Winston’s early days, with the scientist caretaker that raised him.
Back in April, Overwatch datamining revealed sounds and voice clips that helps solidify the theory that a Moonbase map is on its way. The sounds in question included rocket sounds, space ship commands, and even a Winston voice like that said “Go back to the moon? I don’t know.” Suffice to say, the plot has thickened to the consistency of peanut butter. With Blizzard having recently confirmed that six new maps are currently being developed, it’s a strong bet that Jeff Kaplan is planning on sending Winston and the rest of the Overwatch team on a space adventure.
So, what are your thoughts on a potential Overwatch Moonbase map? Think it would be fun? What other extreme-environment maps would you like to see?
