Nintendo Switch May Have 3D Gaming In Its Future
The Nintendo Switch is already a pretty capable piece of gaming tech, the hardware not only able to easily go portable, but house two reasonably responsive motion controllers on each of its sides. However, it appears Nintendo is aiming to add 3D gaming to the hybrid console’s list of features by the looks of a new patent.
According to a recent listing on the United States Patent and Trademark Office website, Big N has an immersive peripheral in the works designed for “eye tracking enabling 3D viewing”. The technology involves the use of a pair of glasses that would translate on-screen events into 3D, a separate camera tracking players’ eyes to further enhance the illusion. The patent included an image (seen below) which depicts what a typical set-up of this technology would look like.
While the above patent is by no means confirmation of a new Nintendo device, it does mean the company is at least interested in furthering their pursuit of three-dimensional gaming. It wouldn’t be too surprising for the company to go this route, as the company’s handheld 3DS notably sports a similarly immersive mode of play.
Nintendo Switch 3D aspirations might not bode well for the already declining 3DS, but it could be an exciting addition for users of the Switch. If a device is ever produced, it could result in some interesting new titles or perhaps even 3DS game emulation for the hybrid system sometime down the line. It’s easy to speculate, but whether or not anything will come to pass currently remains to be seen.
