Nintendo Filed a New Game Boy Patent, See Details Here

Console revivals have become one of the cooler new trends in gaming, and Nintendo has led the way. A new patent indicates the company is looking at an inventive new way to release throwback systems. Naturally, that involves a new version of one of history’s most inventive systems: the Game Boy.

Back in March, Nintendo filed a patent for a functioning Game Boy smartphone case. Just like the Nintendo Switch, it shows a vision that the other major companies do not. (Perhaps that’s why Nintendo doesn’t view Sony and Microsoft as competitors.) Take a look at the designs and you’ll see what I mean.

Sleek, stylish, portable, and convenient. The design broaches on genius. No longer do you have to worry about space for a separate device and charger. As long as you have your phone, you’re ready to game. Some people may argue about the smaller screen, but given the size of modern phones, that shouldn’t be a concern. If that’s something you’re really worried about, Nintendo says the device could also work with tablets.

The phone does not connect via Bluetooth, but instead utilizes touchscreen technology. According to SiliconEra, the buttons on the case react with the touchscreen just like a finger would. Theoretically, this should create instant response times. However, without seeing the product in action, we will have to wait and see how it works.

The Game Boy patent follows a string of retro console patents. Last month, Nintendo hinted at an N64 Classic release. That makes sense given the immense popularity of the NES Classic system. Sony revealed a PlayStation Classic as well in an effort to stay on pace. Months earlier, the Atari VCS destroyed its Indie GoGo campaign goals, and the Commodore 64 Mini drops next week.

Players who miss the games of yesteryear must be in heaven with all of these throwback consoles. And the Game Boy was a singular experience in its heyday. It ended years of players being forced to game in a single location. Other portable devices and smartphones have carried on that proud tradition of playing anywhere. It only feels right that we’re coming full circle thanks to Nintendo.
