Nintendo 64 Classic Release Hinted At With Trademark Filing

Nintendo 64 Classic

With many video game companies finding success in the retro market, re-issuing consoles that are smaller versions of themselves and pre-loaded with a handful of fan-favorite titles, it’s only a matter of time before everyone is on board. That said, Big N is finding a ton of triumph in the field with both the NES and SNES Classic Editions, which makes us wonder when the Nintendo 64 Classic could be inbound.

Nintendo hasn’t exactly been forward on the topic, revealing, well… nothing about a mini version of the beloved console. All we have is a trademark filing, which points to the classic hardware being in the works. The main thing that indicates this is more than likely a N64-related product is the controller image included with the trademark – a simple outline of the totally natural, completely comfortable three-pronged peripheral:

Now, there isn’t much to go off of with the trademark filing from Nintendo. For all we know, they could be re-issuing the N64 controller updated with Bluetooth technology for today’s standards. That said, we could also be getting an announcement from Big N in the coming weeks about a Nintendo 64 Classic. This speculation rises from the recent reveal of a PlayStation Classic from Sony. Needless to say, we could be seeing a 90s-based showdown happening later this year.

Of course, we don’t know for certain that a Nintendo 64 Classic is in the works, but it would probably be a bad move by the company were they not to continue their nostalgia-based mini consoles. To do it at the same time as Sony and recreate the PlayStation vs. Nintendo 64 battle of yesteryear would surely be enjoyable for most. Until we have any official word from the company, however, we’ll just have to keep on guessing.
