Chris McKay is becoming well known for his direction in the recent LEGO Batman movie. It is no surprise that his success might lead him to work on more DC films. The Nightwing director talks on the finer points he enjoys about Nightwing and the idea of a solo film during an interview on the Shanlian Batman Podcast.

McKay noted that Bruce Wayne is a much more “dour and angry” due to the privilege he has. Meanwhile, Dick Grayson isn’t at all like that because he has vastly different life experiences. He essentially comes a much different place than Bruce as a gymnast and circus performer. The Nightwing director had this to say about Grayson’s lifestyle:

They’re people who live hand-to-mouth and that’s something that informs him and his attitude.”

McKay is also fascinated with the fact that Grayson had similar pivotal moments in his life, such as his parents dying tragically, that mirror Bruce’s own life. The Nightwing director thinks that the two characters share faults while simultaneously having different outlooks on life and society. McKay feels this is something that hasn’t shown in a Batman film yet, and perhaps he may be the one to show us that. On Grayson and a stand alone film, he had this final thing to say:

He’s this guy who has all these negatives and then even more negatives and yet he remains. Those are things why I like Dick Grayson, why I like the idea of Nightwing as a movie.”

It was only a few weeks ago that the live-action Nightwing movie was announced and we’re already seeing things come together. Bill Dubuque is reportedly writing the script, with Chris McKay jumping from his background in animation over to his spot as the Nightwing director. More news on this and all of the films coming from the DC Extended Universe are bound to continue to pour in as things develop!
