The New Avatar World Commercial is Freaking People Out (VIDEO)

Avatar World

The 89th Annual Academy Awards aired recently, and in its wake came no small amount of controversy.  Between the announcement of the wrong film being named as the recipient of the Best Picture Award and the sheer fact that Suicide Squad actually won an Oscar, droves of people have taken to Twitter to express their excitement and dismay over the proceedings.  That said, by far the strangest event to take place last night did not happen during the awards ceremony, but before it actually began.  Disney released a brand new commercial for its upcoming Avatar World theme park, and it’s got people, well….scared.  The commercial starts off well enough, with some lovely views of Pandora, a couple quick clips from the Avatar movie, and some introductory words from director James Cameron himself.  About 20 seconds into the commercial, though, we start to hear a thrumming sound that seems to be escalating into what feels like would be a scary reveal, which unfortunately does not disappoint.  Check out the commercial below, and try to prepare yourself for the ending.

Unsettling, isn’t it?  While the Na’vi woman at the very end should seem familiar to fans of the movie (She’s Neytiri’s mother, Mo’at), it does nothing to dispel the creepy vibe exuding from her as she expresses how excited she is to see all of us soon.  Perhaps it is because of how close she appears to viewers, or perhaps it is the way her jaw seems to be disjointed just enough that it gives the entire scene an unnatural feel.  You know, more unnatural than the fact that a blue alien is talking to us.  Regardless of what the reason is, it has people scared.

Nonetheless, the show must go on.  Exclusive to the Disney World in Orlando, Florida, the Avatar World theme park will be opening its doors to visitors on May 27 of this year.  Avatar 2, which will see the return of stars Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana, will arrive in theaters around Christmas 2018.

What do you think of the commercial?  Are you as terrified as the rest of us?  Do you plan on visiting the new theme park when it opens?  Let us know in the comments section below, and as always, don’t forget to follow DFTG on Twitter for all your gaming, movie and tech news!
