Movie Goers Can Expect New Tomb Raider to be “Very Different” From Original Films
With the first images officially released for the new Tomb Raider movie, excitement is already high for the debut of the film in March of 2018. Fans may already recognize the iconic look as that of Lara Croft in the 2013 reboot. You can see those images in the Twitter post below:

Coming on the heels of those images are some more telling details about the video game adaption for the big screen that may turn that excitement up another notch. To start, Director Roar Uthaug noted that filming in South Africa was about finished and would be moving to London. In an interview with GQ, the director of the new Tomb Raider film spilled plenty of details to keep fans happy.
Some reluctance may exist among fans with the new Tomb Raider movie regardless, as many game to film adaptions have typically fallen flat with audiences. Uthaug thinks fans will enjoy the motion picture because it references and pulls inspiration from the whole of the Tomb Raider cannon. He goes on to say that this film will be very different from the ones featuring Angelina Jolie.
It’s a story that not only highlights her incredible physical accomplishments but delves deeper into her humanity. I’ve seen the films–they were a lot of fun and Angelina Jolie was a terrific Lara Croft. We are [making] a very different film, an origin story and I think fans will love Alicia in the role.”
The reboot in 2013 has its influences over the new Tomb Raider film, but Uthaug expressed the difference between this adaptation and other game movies. According to the director, the film will focus less on CGI and more on practical effects. Here is what he had to say about it:
Our movie takes a more realistic, grounded approach. Lara Croft is a hero and a champion but she is not a superhero. She is very much human, and we see her deal with that humanity in many ways.”
The new Tomb Raider movie will feature Dominic West as Lara’s Father, Daniel Wu as an ally and ship captain, and Walton Goggins as the villain. As far as the game goes, fans are still waiting for the last installment of what has been described as a trilogy. A leak from last year revealed that the title for the third game may be Shadow of the Tomb Raider, but we will have to wait and see for confirmation.
