Mortal Kombat 11’s Ed Boon Says Time Travel Will Affect the Entire Franchise’s History

It has been well established that the upcoming NetherRealms fighting game Mortal Kombat 11 will place a heavy emphasis on time travel. New characters both playable and otherwise will twist the reality that players have come to know over the long history of the series. Now Ed Boon, head of NetherRealms, has stepped up to provide a few more details as to how time travel will affect the game, the history of the franchise, and even possibly the future.

A recent blog post got hands- on with the game and went into detail on just how the story itself will be affected by the introduction of characters like Kronika and Geras. Boon explains in the post that the game will follow after the 2011 reboot where a future Raiden sends a message to himself in the past, altering the course of the franchise’s history. Mortal Kombat 11 will deal with the fallout from the change in history, with the new big bad boss Kronika taking direct action to re-alter the flow of time.

According to Boon, “We’re taking all the events of MK1, MK2, and MK3, and folding them on top of the current timeline. We have time quakes, characters meeting their former selves…[for example], young Liu Kang meeting revenant Liu Kang. It’s so cool.”

Travelling through the the history of the franchise holds tons of possibilities for seeing dead characters come back into the yet to be fully revealed roster, and even former stages of previous games potentially coming back as well. Time manipulation isn’t only just going to affect the story either. On top of Kronika, a new fighter named Geras will also be able to manipulate time in fights by undoing damage inflicted upon himself, taking time off the clock, or even using his power to revive himself. It’ll be interesting to see just how players will utilize Geras’ powers or learn to counteract them as time goes on.

Mortal Kombat 11 is set to release on April 23rd for PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch. With the upcoming travel through time, are there any former stages or characters you’d like to see make a return to the game? What could time travel mean for the future of the franchise?
