Minecraft Movie Reveals Release Date And First Details

The production and direction of the Minecraft movie has been turbulent, to say the least. From It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Rob McElhenney bowing out as the director of the film to the on-boarding of Peter Sollett (Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist). Alongside Warner Bros., the team at Mojang will premiere Minecraft the First Movie in 2022.

Despite the distance of its premiere, Mojang and company are excited to reveal the live-action production. Not only is it the first time the studio will take part in creating a full-length feature film, they intend to make this a brand new experience for anyone watching.

“And while the movie has to be different from the game (otherwise, you’d be in for an infinite movie in very low resolution) one thing will definitely be the same,” Mojang writes. “We want to make the movie — just as we make the game — for you. We’re inspired by countless things, but none as much as the incredible stuff our community creates in Minecraft every day. So keep it coming!

So, what exactly is the Minecraft movie all about? Here are the first details:

So, what do you have to look forward to, roughly 25,000 hours from now? Well, as you devour your movie snack of choice (we like a suspicious stew with a side of square watermelon), we’ll tell you the story of a teenage girl and her unlikely group of adventurers. After the malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction, they must save their beautiful, blocky Overworld.
