Microsoft's Real Competition Is Amazon And Google, Says Phil Spencer

With the reveal of the PlayStation 5 seemingly on the horizon, the folks over at Microsoft are gearing up to square off against…well, not Sony, apparently. While many consider the primary “console wars” participants to primarily be Microsoft and Sony, it appears that Xbox boss Phil Spencer is too busy looking at the big picture to worry about what Sony has up its billowy, first party-lined sleeves.

As reported by the folks over at Protocol, Xbox boss Phil Spencer seems to think that Microsoft’s real competition is actually Amazon and Google, rather than the folks over at Sony. “When you talk about Nintendo and Sony, we have a ton of respect for them,” Spencer admits, “but we see Amazon and Google as the main competitors going forward.” Spencer goes on to talk about how traditional gaming companies are “out of position” as they don’t possess the cutting-edge cloud-based software that will come more heavily into play in the future. As such,, as a way of keeping its foot in the door, Microsoft is pushing its xCloud streaming platform.

Amazon and Google are focusing on how to get gaming to 7 billion people around the world. Ultimately, that’s the goal.”

Phil Spencer goes on to clarify that the above statement was in no way meant to “disrespect” Sony or Nintendo, simply stating that the nature of the game is changing. This helps explain why both Sony and Microsoft have been more willing to work with each other recently, something that would have been unheard of back in the days of the PS3 and the Xbox 360. Worse things could happen than Amazon and Google driving Sony and Microsoft closer together. We need only wait and see how the next generation of console gaming plays out.
