Super Smash Bros Ultimate Director Admits There Are “Too Many Fire Emblem Characters”

Fire Emblem characters

Given Nintendo’s lengthy history and numerous franchises, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has felt like something of an all-encompassing reflection of their vast library of  games. With every fighter in the series history present, all of Nintendo’s big series are well represented, with this title including even more third party characters than ever, such as Terry from Fatal Fury. Recently, it was confirmed that the latest DLC character for the game would be Byleth from Fire Emblem: Three Houses. This was met with some backlash by fans who have claimed that there are too many Fire Emblem characters in the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster. Now, a surprising voice has shared these sentiments, and it is none other than Super Smash Bros. Ultimate director Masahiro Sakurai.

As reported on DualShockers, series creator Masahiro Sakurai recently spoke with Famitsu Magazine about his work on Super Smash Bros. Sakurai. It seems that Sakurai felt the need to acknowledge a common fan complaint regarding the quantity of Fire Emblem characters in Smash that has resurfaced on social media lately, saying:

I also know. There are too many FE (Fire Emblem) characters and too many swordsmen. But it’s a fixed thing, so let’s just go. There’s more to be considered.”

Sakurai also seemed to suggest that new characters to be added to the series roster are chosen by Nintendo, rather than himself, so it would seem he is less than thrilled about Byleth’s inclusion. It is quite likely that Byleth was made the final DLC fighter for the first Ultimate fighter pack solely to help promote Fire Emblem: Three Houses. While his inclusion may have disappointed fans, the promise of more DLC characters in a second new fighter pack helped make the news less disappointing. Hopefully Nintendo takes note to pay attention to fan comments, to avoid causing Three Houses to be divided amongst themselves.
