It appears that Crystal Dynamics’ upcoming Marvel’s Avengers game is going play out a bit differently than we expected. We already knew that the events of A-Day would (seemingly) kill off Captain America and tear apart the Avengers, causing repercussions throughout the entire world and flipping what it means to be a superhero on its head. It was expected that the remnants of the Avengers would be “reassembled” at some point after the time gap, and now we know what the driving force behind this is, as Square Enix has revealed that Ms. Marvel AKA Kamala Khan has been announced as the sixth playable character in the game.

Square Enix announced today at New York Comic Con that Kamala Khan will not only be a playable character, but will also serve as the main protagonist for the story. This is quite the surprise, as up until now we expected the other five previously revealed Avengers to simply share screen time with the developer adding in the occasional extra character post-launch. The publisher made the announcement with a reveal trailer featuring some cinematic scenes and gameplay. Check it out below:

A self-avowed Avengers fan, Kamala is exposed to gas during A-Day that gives her abilities similar to those of Mr. Fantastic, which she uses in combination with her intellect to attempt to reassemble the Avengers to help her thwart a global conspiracy. Kamala Khan is wildly popular in the comics thanks to her fan-girlish nature and strong sense of justice, and this will likely be prevalent throughout the events of the game.

Marvel’s Avengers releases on May 15, 2020 for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Google Stadia.
