Madden NFL 21 Seemingly Teases SpongeBob Crossover

While the world continues to inch back towards normalcy, Americans have been seeking comfort in the honored tradition of good ol’ American football, both on television with the NFL and digitally through the Madden series. The NFL was able to continue last year despite the pandemic, and Madden games provided escapism for many. Both forms of football also chose to address greater systemic racial issues in the US, leading up to the NFL discarding the racist former Washington football team name, and Madden reflecting this change in the games. Now, to bring in some lighter fare for kids, Madden NFL 21 seems to be teasing a SpongeBob SquarePants crossover.

The official Madden NFL Twitter account released a cryptic new tweet recently, featuring an image of SpongeBob SquarePants’s face. The account seems to ask the official SpongeBob SquarePants Twitter account “Are you ready?” (a nod to the classic SpongeBob theme song) and includes the date 1/7/21. Most immediately inferred that this is some kind of indication of a SpongeBob SquarePants crossover with Madden NFL 21. What exactly this would entail is not disclosed, but the details should arrive on the given date of 1/7/21.

Madden NFL 21

If this is indeed a Madden NFL 21 crossover with SpongeBob SquarePants, its timing likely means it is meant to help promote the upcoming special NFL Wild Card game that will feature elements from the kid-favorite Nickelodeon cable channel. This Sunday, January 10th at 4:30 PM EST, the Wild Card game between the Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints will feature special Nick-themed visual effects, including the iconic green slime in the end zones, and cartoon SpongeBob eyes superimposed on the players at various points in the game. A pregame special titled “The SpongeBob SportsPants Countdown Special” will also be featured.

It is possible that the visual effects being used for this game might be what the potential Madden crossover event entails. Whatever the tease may end up being, hopefully NFL viewers remember to support their local Krusty Krab Pizza for viewing snacks. After all, the Krusty Krab Pizza is the Pizza for you and me.
