Colin Kaepernick Added To Madden NFL 21

Colin Kaepernick

The past few months have seen a big focus in the United States, and even the world in general, regarding systemic racism, and the video game industry has joined in the conversation and work in various ways. While EA has transgressed against Colin Kaepernick, a key figure in the NFL that has hoped to shed a light on systemic racism, in the past by censoring his name, they are beginning to make amends by allowing players to add him to their team in Madden NFL 21.

EA made the big announcement on their official Madden NFL 21 Twitter account earlier this week. Colin Kaepernick is perhaps the biggest free agent in the NFL, with many attributing his lack of being signed to any team since 2016 due to his public displays of protest against police brutality against persons of color during the national anthem at NFL games. With even NFL commissioner Roger Goodell admitting the shunning of the quarterback to be wrong, many have since demanded to see Kaepernick back in the NFL, and Madden games by extension.

Given this fan outcry, EA released a statement confirming that Colin Kaepernick can now be added as the leader of any NFL team in Madden NFL 21’s Franchise and Play Now modes. EA states that they worked with Kaepernick regarding his inclusion in the new game, and even acknowledged their wrongdoing of censoring his name in past Madden games.

The statement also reads “Knowing that our EA SPORTS experiences are platforms for players to create, we want to make Madden NFL a place that reflects Colin’s position and talent, rates him as a starting QB, and empowers our fans to express their hopes for the future of football.” Hopefully this inclusion helps inspire a real life NFL team to bring Colin back into the fold, and promote a healthier discussion regarding national systemic racism.
