Lucasfilm, the production company that is behind all the Star Wars movies, is currently suing a man named Michael Brown for infringing on their intellectual property. Brown runs the Lightsaber Academy, which teaches it’s students how to duel with lightsabers using the “8 core principles” pictured below.

 

Lucasfilm executives have claimed that Michael Brown has been served multiple cease notices and Brown instead responded by filing out a trademark application for the Lightsaber Academy. Lucasfilms has also claimed that the academy uses a logo very similar to one of their own:

“Defendants regularly use the Lucasfilm Trademarks without authorization in connection with their businesses, Among other infringing activities, Defendants use a logo that is nearly identical, and confusingly similar, to Lucasfilm’s trademark Jedi Order logo”

Here for comparison are the Lightsaber Academy’s logo, and underneath that is the Jedi Order logo:

They are definitely very similar and since Mr. Brown sells merchandise with that logo, Lucasfilm obviously has an issue with it. According to some sources, Lucasfilm is “demanding damages and profits (or up to $2 million in statutory damages for each trademark infringement), as well as a permanent injunction.” Lawsuits like this are becoming quite common. Earlier this year Paramount and CBS filed a lawsuit against a fan made Star Trek film for infringement, as well.
