Kingdom Hearts 3 Will Feature Less Disney Worlds – Focused on Denser Content and Mechanics

Less Disney Worlds, But More Mechs

Since Kingdom Hearts 3‘s initial announcement over four years ago, news has been pretty slow coming about the title, but recently the game’s director Tetsuya Nomura has begun revealing information left and right such as a potential Switch port and keyblade transformation details. These new revelations were highlighted by an outstanding Toy Story themed trailer shown at Disney’s D23 Expo, which hit everyone directly in their Pixar feels. Sitting down with Game Informer, Nomura explains that the addition of Woody and Buzz shouldn’t indicate more environments for Kingdom Hearts 3. He revealed that Square Enix will instead be featuring less Disney worlds to focus on fleshing out the ones they’ve chosen.

Rather than having multiple different little worlds, we wanted to make sure we’re providing rich gameplay in an individual world, so we put in a lot of effort and allocated a lot of resources to create these worlds, and it would be sad for players not to enjoy the world and breeze right through it. Therefore, we made sure that each of the worlds is designed so players can take their time and enjoy the gameplay that’s available.”

An example of this richer gameplay experience are the inclusion of the Giga mechs seen in the recent trailer footage. Nomura expressed that while the suits may have their tactical advantage in battles, they can also be used for some good ol’ fashioned goofing-off.

You don’t necessarily have to board them in order to fight the enemies in that area, but I mean, mechs! You can ride a mech! You want to ride it, right?”

Less Disney Worlds, But More Mechs

Less Disney worlds exchanged for new and interesting game mechanics certainly seems like a worthwhile trade-off. While a smaller number of playgrounds may seem like a drag, the few made available could potentially be more memorable because of the greater wealth of content. When asked what inspired the myriad of new features, Nomura had this to say:

I wanted to showcase that there’s nothing that’s impossible at this point. Previously, we couldn’t have Sora ride on different things to fight and now we can. We wanted to showcase that with the specs of the current generation hardware, it is possible.”
