Hori Announces Themed Nintendo Switch D-Pad Controllers Heading West This Fall

There’s a long line of Nintendo Switch hardware and paraphernalia coming from manufacturer Hori. Most recently, the company announced GameCube controller designs created for the Switch, which includes a USB input for ease of use before outplaying your friends on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. In addition to this, they’ve announced two new d-pad controllers for the hybrid console with themes inspired by the Legend of Zelda and Mario franchise.

These two themed d-pad controllers for the Switch have already launched in Japan. As it stands, they’re headed west this September, sporting neat designs inspired by classic Nintendo franchises. Unfortunately, it comes with a few notable drawbacks. According to IGN, the two new additions lack a few core functions from the original design, including the omission of gyrosensor technology, bluetooth, rumble, battery, and the SL/SR buttons. With that being said, the lack thereof was a purposeful design given the affordable price point of $25 (USD).

The analog stick seen on the original design of the Joy-Con controllers feature a d-pad instead, which warrants the different name. In other words, these versions are ideal for hand-held gameplay and not much else. In fact, the packaging itself mentions it was created with the intention for “handheld mode only.” It’s a fantastic way to brandish your love for Mario or Zelda when taking the Nintendo Switch on the go, and that’s about it.

What do you think of the drawbacks on these new Nintendo Switch d-pad controllers from Hori? Do you think these are cute and simple alternatives to other market options?
