Heroes of the Storm 2.0 – Loot Boxes Inbound as the MOBA Moves into a New Era (VIDEO)

Blizzard is riding high right now with their insurmountable success of the popular shooter Overwatch, but that doesn’t mean that their other popular titles are left in dust. New patches to World of Warcraft, changes to Hearthstone, and now their beloved MOBA Heroes of the Storm is getting ready to phase into the next stage of their evolution with 2.0. With this new era of Storm-loving comes the implementation of a popular Blizzard feature: Loot Boxes.

Don’t look at 2.0 as a relaunch though, as far as playability – the game will change very little. 2.0 celebrates the progression of the MOBA since launch – the additions of new characters, maps, and more that have sprung up through the years. The celebration doesn’t just reflect back on the past, though – there will also be new content added in coming months which will upgrade leveling systems as well as tweaking their rewards for dedicated players. Among those rewards is the inclusion of Loot Boxes.

Much like with Overwatch, when a player reaches a new level, they are then awarded what is called a Loot Chest (they’ve got to make a little different). What is inside these chests is a surprise filled with a variety of content amassing the wide selection of characters present within Heroes. Everything short of event-only content can be found in these randomized chests, including those hard-to-come-by Legendary skins. Mounts, skins, icons, sprays, voice lines, and more can be found in these rewards chests, all you have to do is play.

If Storm players are impatient and don’t want to wait to level in order to get these new chests, unlockable items such as heroes and skins can be bought using ‘gems’. And just like in Overwatch if you unlock a duplicate, they will compensate you with these Gems to put them towards something not already owned. These cosmetic features allow for players to immerse themselves further within the game and tailor their heroes to them. All cosmetic changes do nothing towards playable boosts, but hey – lookin’ good never hurt anybody.
