Fortnite Devs Sue 14 Year Old Cheater, Mom Fights Back

Developers suing their players for misuse of their property is nothing new, but what Epic Games didn’t count on is the mother of one Fortnite cheater fighting back when the company decided to go after her 14 year old. Last month, Epic Games took not one, but two cheaters to court after banning them from the cartoon-ey online game. Now new details have come to light to detail what went down with the Fortnite devs and how one momma bear feels about the whole situation.

The mother of said minor wrote a letter to the courts to discuss Epic’s “attack” and how she feels they handled the situation poorly (click to enlarge):

Part of her argument against Epic includes that the game requires parental consent, which she never game. She also takes a shot at their free-to-play philosophy stating that though the game itself is based on a loss of profits, their claim that her son’s cheating caused a “mass profit loss” has no grounds. She also claimed that the company is using her son as a scapegoat instead of going after the companies/websites that offer cheating programs. There’s also the whole mess of releasing a minor’s information to the public, despite the state of the case having laws against that. Basically – it’s a mess.

With the cases now in full effect, it’s going to be interesting to see how this plays out. Rather than just banning the players, they are going all out to make them pay. You know, in addition the 5-15 bucks the cheating programs cost monthly. It begs the question – should players be sued for the use of available programs? It also begs the question, why can’t these scrubs just get good at a game and stop using cheating software to begin with.

Conundrums.

Statement has since released the following statement:

This particular lawsuit arose as a result of the defendant filing a DMCA counterclaim to a takedown notice on a YouTube video that exposed and promoted Fortnite Battle Royale cheats and exploits”, Epic says in a statement sent to Kotaku. “Under these circumstances, the law requires that we file suit or drop the claim.

Epic is not okay with ongoing cheating or copyright infringement from anyone at any age. As stated previously, we take cheating seriously, and we’ll pursue all available options to make sure our games are fun, fair, and competitive for players.”

What do you think about the Epic Games debacle? Are the Fortnite devs being too harsh, or should the mom teach her son how to ‘git gud’? You decide and let us know your thoughts in the comment section below, and don’t forget to check out DFTG on Twitter for gaming and entertainment news live 24/7!
