Fallout 76 Receiving New PvP Mode Early 2019

Fallout 76

Today, Bethesda released a new update for Fallout 76. The patch makes some basic improvements, plus addresses one of the game’s many spectacular bugs. But the developer also provided insight into a future update that will arrive sooner than many people expect. A highly requested PvP mode without restrictions will drop early in 2019.

On their website, Bethesda shared some future plans for Fallout 76. The first portion of the post details the next patch, which should make players happy but not exuberant.

“Our sights are set for future updates. In mid-January, we will be releasing another patch that contains many fixes, including fixes for the Lever-Action Rifle reload animation, some perk cards, and we’re dealing some crowd control at the Whitespring by implementing a fix for the robots duplicating on the resort grounds.”

That sounds well and good; a game this buggy needs all the hot fixes it can get. However, the second part of Bethesda’s post should create considerably more buzz.

“We’re also hard at work on a new mode where you can work together, or not, without PVP restrictions. We’re already having fun playing it at the office and we’re hopeful to roll it out to all of you sometime in the first quarter of the year.”

At the moment, PvP in Fallout 76 only really occurs if both players engage. If one player refuses to fight back, the aggressor incurs a bounty and the pacifist takes reduced damage. A true PvP mode would create chaos in West Virginia. I’m picturing something like GTA V Online in the Wasteland. Bases could face brutal onslaughts from other players at any moment. Nuke races could easily turn into Civilization-esque devastation, making a desolate land even more barren. The possibilities for the Appalachian Apocalypse remain endless.

We will have to wait and see which way Bethesda goes with this new mode, but it seems like a good start to fix an extremely messy launch. It’s a much better option than loot crates.

What do you think of unrestricted PvP in Fallout 76? Do you think Bethesda is rushing into this new mode a little too quickly? Or would this rekindle/strengthen your interest in the game?
