Dynasty Warriors Devs Want A Star Wars Musou Game

Star Wars Visions

While much of the modern gaming industry began in Japan, franchises that previously only stayed in Japan by limited release or popularity have become more adopted by western audiences. Such has been the case with the Dynasty Warriors series, which began as a very Asian-centric look at medieval Chinese history. The franchise’s furious army combat structure has lent itself well to adaptation with pre-existing franchises. These have included The Legend of Zelda and Dragon Quest “Musou” games. Now, the Dynasty Warriors devs have suggested that their top choice for a crossover project would be to make a Star Wars musou game.

Editor’s Note: Musou games are, for those unaware, basically beat ’em up hack n’ slash titles, such as Dynasty Warriors.

Star Wars Musou

JPGames recently spoke with Dynasty Warriors producer Akihiro Suzuki. He spoke on behalf of the Dynasty Warriors devs for much of the interview, but when asked specifically about what franchise they would love to see adapted in the musou format. Suzuki chose to speak from his individual opinion, but he suggested that he would love to see a Star Wars musou game as his top choice to develop. As for other improvements to the series he and the team would like to see, he had this to say:

I’d like to be able to increase the sense of immersion into the battlefield through more realistic depictions, especially through the visual representation and the individual movement (AI) of every single soldier. Also, if we can have multiple people playing simultaneously online, that would be really fun.”

While Disney has been a little selective as to what studios they let work on Star Wars games, in recent years they have started letting publishers besides EA work with the franchise. The Dynasty Warriors musou melee combat action would work well with lightsaber-wielders, especially if the Jedi and Sith would lean into medieval China and Japan-era aesthetics. This worked well recently with the Star Wars Visions anime shorts, and would fit in nicely as a Star Wars musou game. Hopefully Disney considers this idea so Dynasty Warriors and Star Wars fans gets the crossover of their dreams. What a binary sunset would that be to behold!
