Detective Pikachu Spurs Hilarious Feud Over Furry Jigglypuff

Yesterday, fans took a trip narrowly close to the uncanny valley with the debut of the first Detective Pikachu trailer. A genuine surprise to most of its viewers, the film looks like it’ll be extremely enjoyable, and may open the gate wide for more live action Pokemon films in the future. As is the trend with the internet, fans have already begun choosing sides when it comes to how each Pokemon actually looks within the film, and while it is certainly enjoyable to see people speaking about how terrified they are for the Mr. Mime appearance, or how excited they are to see just what happens to Pikachu when confronting a rampaging Charizard, the biggest fan divide by far is in regards to the Jigglypuff seen in the trailer.

Jigglypuff makes its debut rather briefly in the Detective Pikachu trailer, standing on a table next to a sleeping man who will presumably be waking up with scribble marks on his face if the original anime series is any indication. The real concern here is Jigglypuff’s appearance, which is furry as opposed to the glossy finish seen in the anime. Naturally, this has many Pokemon fans divided, with some loving the new look and others absolutely detesting it. Here are some of the fan reactions:

Those who loved it:

Those who didn’t love it:

And those who were too busy making hilarious comparisons:

Love it or hate it, Jigglypuff is going to be in the Detective Pikachu movie and I dare you to stop it. Here’s the official synopsis for the film:

“The story begins when ace detective Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son Tim to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry’s former Pokémon partner, Detective Pikachu: a hilariously wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth who is a puzzlement even to himself. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to communicate with one another, Tim and Pikachu join forces on a thrilling adventure to unravel the tangled mystery. Chasing clues together through the neon-lit streets of Ryme City—a sprawling, modern metropolis where humans and Pokémon live side by side in a hyper-realistic live-action world—they encounter a diverse cast of Pokémon characters and uncover a shocking plot that could destroy this peaceful co-existence and threaten the whole Pokémon universe.”

The Detective Pikachu movie releases on May 10, 2019.
