New Death Stranding Trailer Reveals Characters ‘Mama’ And ‘Bridge Baby’
Today is an excellent day to be a Hideo Kojima fan. While the opening night presentation at Gamescom 2019 may be over, The Game Awards creator Geoff Keighley ended things on a particularly high note by welcoming Kojima-san onto the stage to talk about his upcoming title Death Stranding. Speaking through a translator, Kojima-san announced that he was here to present some new gameplay footage for those in attendance, providing us with a deeper look at some of the previously revealed characters in the game.

Seen above is the first of the two new Death Stranding trailers, revealing the character ‘Mama’ played by (and modeled after) actor Margaret Qualley. Mama is revealed to be in an interesting set of circumstances. Here baby was born on the “other side” and Mama is still attached to her via umbilical cord, meaning she is unable to leave her baby behind. It is unknown what the repercussions would be were she to attempt to so do, though it is implied that it wouldn’t be particularly good for either of them.
The ‘Bridge Baby and Deadman’ trailer gives us yet another piece of the Death Stranding puzzle. Protagonist Sam is seen entering a room and being instructed by Deadman – played by Guillermo del Toro – to attach his BB’s capsule to the incubator, after which it is explained that the device shown is used to neurally sync up the BB’s environment with that of its mother’s womb. This is done in order to help calm the BB, and enable it to more easily assist Sam in doing his job.
While separately the trailers do a great job of providing some interesting details for the world of Death Stranding, together they paint an interesting picture depicting a delicate balance between life and death, and what the characters within the game must do in their attempt to preserve humanity.
Death Stranding will release exclusively for the PlayStation 4 on October 8, 2019.
