Critical Role Video Game In Early Planning Stages

Critical Role Video Game

Tabletop gaming has seen a return to mainstream popularity in recent years, with Critical Role skyrocketing as one of the medium’s most ubiquitous faces. The franchise quickly rose from fledgling podcast and livestream show to a valuable media property in its own right alongside tabletop’s resurgence. Critical Role now boasts a vast empire, featuring merchandise like clothing and collectible premium statues, to spinoff media like books and an animated series. The series seems well positioned to continue their climb up the media landscape ladder, and their next step upward might just be a Critical Role video game project.

Critical Role

Variety recently released an introspective on Critical Role and its wide array of projects, both current and future. The tabletop gaming-focused series is set to start its third major campaign next week on October 21st, with its premiere set for showings simultaneously in 30 Cinemark movie theaters. There is also the big Legends of Vox Machina animated series set to begin on Amazon Prime Video next February. According to this feature from Variety, a feature film and a video game are the next biggest projects in early stages of development by their company. As the report states regarding the Critical Role video game:

Matthew Cohen, an agent in CAA’s games department who works with Critical Role, says talks with publishers and studios about a game based on the fantasy franchise are in early stages. “We have to be very particular about what that means and who the partners are,” he says.

The main cast of Critical Role are no strangers to video games, as most of them have consistently worked as video game voice actors for years. However, they are also well aware of how long video games take to create, and have suggested that the Critical Role video game project will not be finished for quite some time, as it is still quite early in its planning stages. Still, this will surely be taken by Critical Role fans as exciting news as a new prospect for immersing themselves into the worlds of their favorite characters. Until then, the project is just as much in the world of imagination as the characters played by Matthew Mercer and friends are.
