Bungie Warns DDOS Cheaters: “We Take Cheating Very Seriously”
In their official blog post this week, Destiny developer Bungie addressed recent complaints from fans with regard to some players cheating, specifically by means of DDOS (Denial of Service) attack within the games crucible and Trials of Osiris modes. What exactly is a DDOS attack you might be wondering? DDOS attacks are malicious acts in which a player/hacker literally overloads a target’s internet connected device such as a video game console or computer with a flood of traffic causing too much strain on the network triggering the victim to be kicked offline.
Attacks like these are possible due to Destiny’s use of peer-to-peer connections which allows any player to obtain the IP address of other players within a match. Once the cheater has their opponents IP address they can then initiate the attack on an entire team thereby disrupting their connection to the game and winning by default. Due to the manner in which the two modes work along with how the reward system is set up makes it all that more frustrating for those who play the game fairly.
Earlier this week we covered player complaints about dirty tactics in the Trials of Osiris. In this mode, teams that win 9 rounds without a defeat earn the “Flawless Victory” award entitling them to honor and some pretty exclusive in-game loot. Now imagine your team is one round or game away from obtaining this achievement and someone on the opposing team initiates a DDOS attack, that’s right you guessed it, all your hard work is for not. It’s not hard to understand why players are so frustrated.
As a part of their blog post Bungie reassures players that they are taking cheating “very seriously” and warns these unsportsmanlike players that they have a team of people as well as automated systems tasked with rooting them out.
“We have several team members whose full-time jobs are to ensure the security of your Destiny experience. The Banhammer is being swung often. We take DDoS attacks very seriously. We have automated systems in place to detect them and take action against offenders, up to and including permanent bans from Destiny. Some of the offenders reported this past weekend in trending threads fall in this category and have played their last Trials card.”
It appears that the ex Halo developer is taking strong measures to prevent these attacks from occurring and dishing out harsh punishment for those who are caught. Cheating out right disrupts the balance of competitive play and diminishes the fun of the game overall.
