Borderlands 3 Director Reveals Why Handsome Jack Can't Return

Despite the impending release of Borderlands 3, it is difficult not to think about the series and immediately have a picture in mind of the infamous Borderlands 2 villain, Handsome Jack. The enigmatic character had, of course, a massive presence in the first sequel of the game, which also having an entirely new part to play in the prequel, with special mention for his work in Tales from the Borderlands. Unfortunately, his tenure within the series appears to be at an end, though there’s an admittedly good reason for it.

In a recent interview at Gamescom 2019, Borderlands 3 creative director Paul Sage was asked how feasible it would be to pull Handsome Jack back into the series. According to Sage, the director knew that such a return would be hugely impactful for the series, though bringing him back would essentially nullify most of what happened in Borderlands 2.

For those that don’t recall, Handsome Jack met his end during the final parts of the game, though not without wreaking some significant havoc along the way. As such, there’s always the possibility that the villain could be referenced or have some sort of cameo in Borderlands 3, though the character himself likely won’t have much of a part to play moving forward.

Borderlands 3 releases on September 13 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, with a Stadia version now in development.
