Blizzard Reaches 46 Million Monthly Active Users With the Help of Overwatch’s Playerbase

The overwhelming growth of Overwatch has been incredible for Blizzard as it continues to a year after its debut into the gaming world. In fact, with the help of Overwatch‘s playerbase, the company officially reached 46 million monthly active users (MAU). This is quite the accomplishment considering how long it has been on the market. According to Activision Blizzard’s second quarter earnings report, big thanks not only to the popular team-based, multiplayer first-person shooter, but to the online card game Hearthstone as well.

Blizzard had the biggest quarterly online player community in its history with a record 46 million MAUs, up 38% year‐over-year. The Overwatch community continued to grow more than a year after launch, setting another all‐time MAUB record with the release of two seasonal events in the quarter. Hearthstone® MAUsB grew year‐over‐year and quarter‐over‐quarter to an all‐time record, driven by its expansion, Journey to Un’Goro™.”

The company also witnessed accomplishments in other departments as well. In regards to record time spent playing, two particular franchises brought it home. Aside from the two traffic-driving events for Overwatch, World of Warcraft‘s Legion expansion saw growth in player participation, effectively outperforming Warlords of Draenor. Credit is given to Diablo III as well. While a notable increase wasn’t mentioned, there was “strong in-game participation” due to the introduction of new content.

Blizzard had Q2-record time spent. In April, Blizzard launched Uprising, an Overwatch seasonal event that included a player-versus-environment mode that drew record play time. Overwatch’s Anniversary event in May and June also drove strong engagement with record participation in customization items. Time spent in World of Warcraft grew year-over-year in the second quarter, and the Legion expansion continued to perform ahead of the prior expansion.”

What’s more is there may be even more records set as the teams at Blizzard continue to come up with original content for their current franchises, introduce new characters, or bring back favorites. While this is just speculation, it seems likely that the first-person shooter will continue to propel forward toward a positive direction. A helpful factor being that Overwatch’s playerbase is no stranger to having their voices heard, especially from Jeff Kaplan himself.
