BioWare Announces Mass Effect Annihilation – Quarians, Drell, and Elcor Return!

Ever since BioWare announced an indefinite halt of Mass Effect: Andromeda DLC, fans have been left wondering when or if they’d ever get another story set within the sci-fi universe. After all, the studio had begun teasing a new adventure prior to shutting down supplemental development. Now it seems the story of the Quarian ark will finally be told, just not in the way we were all expecting. BioWare has announced a new tie-in novel called Mass Effect Annihilation, and the book will bring back the Quarians and a few other fan-favorite races for another space-set adventure.

Chronicling the voyage of the Quarian ark “Keelah Si’yah”, Mass Effect Annihilation will tell the story of the 20,000 Drell, Elcor, Batarian, and Quarian colonists on their way to the Andromeda galaxy. Things take a grim turn aboard the vessel when a pathogen is introduced, and many Drell are discovered dead within their cryo pods. Events progressively get worse as the unknown disease sweeps across other species and the ship’s systems are inexplicably compromised, leading to the conclusion that this is no accident.

Mass Effect Annihilation will mark the first tie-in media since Dark Horse Comics’ Discovery series and the upcoming Initiation story. The new novel will also see the first appearance of Drell, Elcor, Batarian, or Quarian races since the Andromeda story began. While it is unfortunate that none of them will be visually featured in the game, it’s still cool to see BioWare throw out a bit of fan service while the franchise is on hold. Mass Effect Annihilation will be written by author Catherynne M. Valente and will hit stores on June 26, 2018.
