BioShock Director Wants BioShock 4 To "Cast Off The Chains Of The Past"

“There’s always a lighthouse. There’s always a man. There’s always a city.” Yet, despite these words affirming what has loosely connected the BioShock series, that needn’t always be the case. With the recent reveal that another BioShock game is now in the works by newly minted 2K studio Cloud Chamber, fans are wondering if the developer will choose to run with the foundations left from the previous games or forge ahead and explore the unknown. Now, it has been revealed that original BioShock director Jordan Thomas is seemingly hoping for the later.

Speaking with fellow gaming journalist Samuel Horti, Jordan Thomas revealed that he’s hoping that the next BioShock game will be something completely brand new and not something related to the previous entries in the series. “I hope they cast off the chains of the past, that they feel as unbound as possible,” Thomas said. “That is what I’d hope the series [is] known for: taking you to places you didn’t expect, thematically and physically.” This may very well be the direction Cloud Chamber is going in, though not much was hinted at in the recent public press release from 2K President David Ismailer. “As we continue growing our product portfolio, we remain inspired by opportunities to invest further in our valuable IP, great people, and their collective, long-term potential,” said Ismailer.

BioShock is one of the most beloved, critically praised, and highest-rated franchises of the last console generation. We can’t wait to see where its powerful narrative and iconic, first-person shooter gameplay head in the future with our new studio team at Cloud Chamber leading the charge.”

There’s quite a lot riding on the franchise given its absence in recent years, so here’s hoping that the developer takes heed of Jordan Thomas’ words and plans to run with something fresh and unexpected.

The next BioShock game is now in development.
