Australian Call of Duty: WWII Version Adjusts Controversial Scene

Australian Call of Duty WWII

Any gamer knowledgeable enough about World War II could likely know that a Call of Duty game centered around the events of WWII would certainly contain some weighty elements. While Call of Duty: WWII has not caused as much backlash as the new Wolfenstein game, its U.S. soldier-focused storyline is sure to anger some people in this current political climate. However, when it comes to other such controversial content, Australia has other concerns. One scene in particular gave the Australian Classification Board reason enough to add a specific “Threat of Sexual Violence” descriptor on the game. Now, the Australian Call of Duty: WWII version has adjusted this scene to remove the description from their rating.

The Australian Classification Board recently clarified this rating, as well as why it was placed and subsequently removed. The Board gave the Threat of Sexual Violence description to the game based on “a reference to sexual violence that is justified by context”, though not actually shown or directly involving the player. The scene in question is when the player controls the female spy Rosseau in a Nazi building and sees a Nazi soldier forcing a woman into a closet.

The player then enters the closet and can then choose to intervene and kill the offending soldier, or leave. If the player leaves, the soldier audibly lowers the zipper on his trousers and moves closer on the non-consenting woman. Nothing more is shown, but the implications of this scene proved enough to gain the extra sexual violence description. The Australian version has now been changed by Sledgehammer Games, removing the audio of the soldier unzipping his pants and changing the woman’s skirt to a pair of pants. These are notably small changes, but apparently made the difference to the Board to get the description removed.

There’s no word if this change will be made in other territories, but this adjustment will likely make Activision feel a bit more secure about the game’s potential sales numbers.
