Activision Denies Claims of Bungie Stock Penalty for Destiny 2
During the annual earnings call with Activision, there has been talk about words exchanged between them and Bungie. Activision CEO, Eric Hirshberg, discussed goals and hopes for the Destiny sequel. In an attempt to make the franchise lore more fluid and coherent, there will be a overhauled effort in cinematic stories and characters. As many know, well-executed stories can pull in loyal fans who want to invest their passion and time. However, since the meeting between publisher and developer, a report released some interesting information.
If a 2017 deadline for Destiny 2 isn’t met, the publisher would then receive a large sum of Bungie stock. According to Kotaku, the game developer denies any and all claims regarding that sort of relationship. A representative stated:
There is no scenario where Activision, or any other partner we work with, is awarded Bungie stock.”
Either there was a lapse in wording or misunderstanding between Kotaku’s sources. It’s possible confirming agreements of such caliber would be controversial. Since a 2017 release date for Destiny 2 has been confirmed by Hirshberg, it’s unclear whether that sort of dynamic still exists. Nevertheless, the public only have those words to go on.
There have been rumors and claims regarding the franchise sequel circulating the internet, namely Reddit. For instance, there was the suggestion that the title for Destiny 2 would be Forge of Hope. Those ideas were quickly squashed by Bungie Marketing Director Eric Osborne when he took to Twitter and replied with a witty “Forge of Nope“. Sassy and hilarious!
What do you think of the relationship dynamics between Activision and Bungie? Do you believe it was all a misunderstanding or is there more going on?
