Critical Role Announces Animated Series Plans Following Kickstarter Success (UPDATED)

Critical Role Announces Animated Series Plans Following Kickstarter Success

Update: We apologize for the misunderstanding regarding CR’s affiliation with Geek & Sundry, they are no longer affiliated with the company as per the announcement made in February.

While tabletop gaming still has somewhat of a smaller spotlight compared to video games and other forms of entertainment, the pastime has found a renaissance of popularity thanks to the internet. A big catalyst for this rise in interest has been due to YouTube series and podcasts featuring tabletop gaming players. Easily one of the most popular tabletop shows has been Geek and Sundry’s Critical Role, which features professional voice actors playing Dungeons & Dragons campaigns. A Kickstarter campaign was recently started to fund a Critical Role animated special, and thanks to its record-breaking success, it seems that the project will now become a full-fledged animated series.

A new update on the Critical Role animated special Kickstarter page confirmed that the project’s greater than expected funding so far has increased the size of the animated project. The project was initially only going to consist of a single episode with a goal of $750,000 needed to produce it. However, after amassing $4 million in less than 24 hours, which just so happened to break several Kickstarter records, Geek & Sundry deliberated and felt it achievable to now make a full Critically Role animated series with so much financial backing made available to them.Critical Role

As a series, these episodes will retell the story of Vox Machina, the characters from the first Critically Role campaign. Geek & Sundry also added new stretch goals that would add episodes based on the Briarwoods story arc. A stretch goal adding two of these episodes has already been reached, and more could be potentially earned if the momentum from this fundraising campaign continues. This is quite a feat for a show that started as a simple passion podcast project for professional geeks. I think it’s safe to say, this is definitely a critical hit.
