Portal Speedrunner Sets Crazy New World Record (VIDEO)
Speeding to the end of a game has always been a point of competition pretty much since the dawn of the internet, but the eternal contest for that coveted World Record run has only grown more heated as the years have gone on. As big-game bouts continually shrink into mere minutes of play time, speedrunners often taking advantage of shortcuts and glitches to get that final time as close to zero as possible.
In recent memory one of the most seemingly airtight of these types of runs was that of Valve’s teleportation puzzle game Portal, the normally hour-ish proceedings unfathomably minimized to just over 7 minutes. However, it now appears as though that record has been shattered by an utterly mind-blowing new run, performed by the game’s previous record holder no less! Seen in the video below, fittingly-named speedrunner Can’t Even can be seen zipping through Portal’s various chambers and strategically utilizing exploits to an almost disorienting degree.
It’s immediately evident how much skill we’re dealing with here. Can’t Even seems effortless in their maneuvering of the map, slipping into invisible corners and firing off portals into the void between areas with non-stop precision. One especially clever time-saver arrives after positioning underneath the game’s Aperture Science elevator, after which a bit of calculated “thinking with portals” results in bypassing several levels in a row.
Of course, Portal is only one of many popular games that speedrunners have made their playground, as plenty of titles both new and old have seen their challenges vaulted for racing’s sake. During several notable runs, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was beaten in just 45 minutes, all Dark Souls Achievements were earned in the space of 4 hours, and the entire Fallout series was completed in under 90 minutes. The charity-based speedrunning event Awesome Games Done Quick is currently gearing up for its 2019 event, which takes place next month on January 6th.
Portal is out now on Android, Linux, Mac, PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.
