DFTG Recaps The Week’s Biggest Movie/TV Trailers: June 12th (VIDEO)
As the entertainment industry is a boundless expanse of hype, we have yet another week of trailers to take a gander at. The past seven days offered an incredible bevy of new movie and TV hype, with the week of June 12th showcasing some pretty noteworthy titles like the Disney Princess-filled Wreck-It Ralph 2, Spider-Man’s gorgeous trip into the Spider-Verse, and the final chapter of Dreamworks’ ‘Dragon‘ franchise. DFTG recaps the biggest TV and movie trailers of the week in the list below.
Bumblebee
If there were ever a time for the Transformers franchise to finally live up to its source material, Bumblebee might be the movie fans have been waiting for. While previous entries may have been entertaining in other ways, the upcoming prequel film seems to be going in a much different direction as evidenced by the first trailer. The footage quite literally echoes a “mystical bond between man and machine,” likely due to the addition of director Travis Knight (Kubo and the Two Strings) and writer Christina Hodson (Batgirl).
As the film takes place in the 1980s, we also get a new protagonist with the voice of Gwen Stacy herself Hailee Steinfeld. I’m told actor/WWE wrestler John Cena is in the film as well, but I just couldn’t see him. Then again, catching a glimpse of the man who dubbed the phrase “you can’t see me” is next to impossible. We’ll see if we can finally spot John Cena when Bumblebee hits theaters on December 21st.
First Man
The story of how we successfully ascended from the Earth to land on the Moon is an incredible one, and the man most attributed to that monumental accomplishment is astronaut Neil Armstrong. As the first man to walk on the Moon, Armstrong’s life leading up to the famed Apollo 11 mission isn’t as widely known. However, the upcoming film First Man aims to tell his story on the big screen, with acclaimed director Damien Chazelle (Whiplash) at the helm and actor Ryan Gosling filling the boots of Neil Armstrong. First Man is scheduled for launch on October 12th.
Halloween
The horrific Halloween killer Michael Myers is lumbering back to the big screen and this time, he’s canon. Well, sort of. This new entry into the long-running slasher franchise makes like Michael and murders nearly all of the admittedly convoluted continuity that came before, with only the original 1978 Halloween being taken into consideration. While effectively retconning the entire Halloween franchise may put off some of the series’ hardcore fans, the result sees the iconic return of Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode, which is far from a bad thing. We’ll see Michael finally return for a new night of mayhem when Halloween hits theaters on October 19th.
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World
DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon series has been nothing short of incredibly heartwarming viewing. The growing bond between main character Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) and his pet dragon Toothless has been the focal point of the entire series, with the movies’ many characters also growing older with each installment. Now the time has come for the entire franchise’s culmination with the concluding chapter of The Hidden World.
Dragons and Vikings are now living happily in harmony amongst each other? Time for someone to ruin the fun! Enter a ruthless hunter with a taste for bringing down Night Furies, a race of dragons of which Toothless happens to be the final member. This constant onslaught sends the whole of dragonkind into jeopardy, a problem made even more complicated by the discovery of an entirely new species: the Light Fury. Even though this film is made for kids, you can bet I’ll be there when How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World hits theaters on March 1st, 2019.
The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part
The LEGO Movie was such a happy surprise back in 2014, especially as the film could have easily tumbled down the avenue of bizarre product placement. The same-off the-wall humor that made the first film so fun seems to be back in the upcoming sequel, at least according to the trailer. Titled The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, we see that super-special master builder Emmet (Chris Pratt) has a pretty tall task ahead of him when Lucy (Elizabeth Banks) and his fellow LEGO pals are kidnapped by a mysterious masked figure. Will Emmet save the day? Probably. We’ll just have to see how it happens when The LEGO Movie 2 hits theaters on February 8th, 2019.
The Magic Order
Following Netflix’s acquisition of Millarworld, the public were ablaze with speculation about what the streaming service would do with Mark Millar’s well-known comic company. No, they aren’t greenlighting a Kick-Ass 3 movie. Netflix have instead revealed their interest in publishing comic books, beginning with the original story The Magic Order. With writing by Millar and art by Olivier Coipel, the upcoming title will follow a group of magical beings that team up to defeat a monstrous evil force. The whole thing oozes a Harry Potter meets Watchmen vibe, which is a pretty intriguing idea to say the least.
Yes, I know what you’re thinking. While interesting, this property isn’t part of the movie or TV spectrum. Well, too bad! It’s being counted anyways, if for the sole reason that Netflix, a traditional movie/TV outlet, is making it. If you need another reason, Netflix also released a trailer for the 6-issue miniseries, which you can view above. The Magic Order #1 will be available in comic shops on June 13th.
Mortal Engines
What does a society do when the world has devolved into a Mad Max-esque wasteland? Why, transform the largest cities into giganting moving vehicles of course! That’s the big-concept premise of Mortal Engines. Cities gear up and prey on one another with monstrous machines to compete for supremacy in a world of dwindling resources. The concept by itself has huge promise on the big screen, not to mention the story is based on a classic book series. Whether this film can measure up is still up in the air, but it looks like it could be a fun ride when Mortal Engines crawls into theaters on December 14th.
Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2
Unless you count an appearance in Sonic All-Star Racing Transformed, we haven’t seen Ralph do to much wrecking as of late. Don’t fret, as the large-built “bad guy” we know and love is back in a harder, better, faster, stronger sequel, and this time he’s taking his penchant for destroying nouns across the digital frontier. Of course a journey into the internet wouldn’t be the same without the adorable troublemaking of Vanellope von Schweetz, whose antics end up landing her in the wonderful world wide web of Disney. Here’s hoping there’s a random Tron cameo when Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 hits theaters on November 21st.
Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind
Memorializing the incredible career of Robin Williams, the upcoming HBO documentary Come Inside My Mind takes a look into the life of the beloved, yet troubled funnyman’s long stint in stand-up comedy as well as his successes on the big and small screen. The film tells Williams’ story from his own perspective, with various voice-overs addressing his heartbreaking battles with depression and addiction, describing his deep delves into comedy as a coping mechanism. “I don’t tell jokes, I just use characters as a vehicle for me,” he says. Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind premieres on HBO July 16th.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
Based on Marvel’s huge Spider-Verse comic storyline, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse gathers numerous versions of the web-head from across the multiverse for a single team-up adventure. The colorful adaptation seems to pull from the source material in incredible ways, from the eye-catching comic book visuals reminiscent of artist Sara Pichelli, to the plentiful inclusion of “Spider-people” such as the Spider-Woman of Earth-65, a.k.a. Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld). As the crossover will presumably include every single version of the hero, perhaps we could see Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield’s live-action version of Peter Parker make a return. We’ll see if dreams come true when Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse swings into theaters on December 14th.
