Anyone who has paid attention to video game sales data charts for the past few years most likely has noticed one constant throughout that time period. Grand Theft Auto V has remained in the list of top selling games for most months since the game’s launch in 2013. A four year streak of game sales that big is nothing to scoff at, and the game has rewarded players with continued content even up to this year. Now, the latest August US sales data has the NPD market research group drawing conclusions, and names Grand Theft Auto V the bestselling video game of all time.

The NPD group has reported on the new August US sales data they published, stating that Grand Theft Auto V was only surpassed by Madden 18 in total sales during August 2017. This final bit of sales led to the Rockstar game to this notable part of industry history. To specify, the two metrics that the game specifically achieved with its sales is the most revenue brought in by sales for a single game and the number of recordable sales of a game across all its available platforms. The latter metric would, of course, exclude games such as Tetris that sell on numerous platforms that may not record their sales.

Given the re-release of the game for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and the continued support for the game through Grand Theft Auto Online, it is easy to see how this game managed to maintain its longevity in the sales dept. Still, this game has certainly cemented itself as a tentpole of gaming history and, hopefully, generations will know of the exploits of Michael, Trevor, and Franklin.
