Nintendo to Cease Production on the Wii U
[UPDATE TO THIS STORY AS OF NOVEMBER CAN BE FOUND AT THE LINK HERE]
Original story:
It comes as no surprise that Nintendo will cease production on the Wii U line by Friday, November 4th, 2016. As stated by Eurogamer, since Wii U’s release in 2012, only 13.36 million units have been sold by September 30th, 2016. In four years, less than 15 million consoles were bought by consumers. Compared to Wii U’s predecessor – the Wii sold a mind-boggling 101 million units.
The deadline for production orders for the console were placed at the beginning of this year.
One can presume that there has been a steady decrease in sales since Wii U’s release in 2012. It does seem, however, like a smart move on Nintendo’s behalf. The Nintendo Switch was recently announced. With less than 2 months away, their attention needs to be focused on the Switch’s highly anticipated debut.
Despite difficulties with Wii U numbers, Nintendo has managed to skate by with the success of Pokemon GO with a whopping 500 million dollars in revenue by early September.
Do you remember when Pokemon GO debuted in the United States? Just this summer – July 6th, 2016. Now, what does that mean? That means, that in just two months, Niantic and Nintendo managed to make half a BILLION dollars in profit.
According to App Annie, the revenue brought in by Pokemon GO’s fanbase absolutely demolished the competition – 3.3 times faster than Candy Crush Saga, and 6.7 times faster than Puzzle & Dragons and Clash of Clans.
Do you believe Nintendo is making the right decision by discontinuing the production line for the Wii U?
